Hy-Vee

Went to the Hy Vee this afternoon spent 1/2 hour filling my shopping cart and then went to the check out. Only 2 cashiers, and the Express cashier open stood in line with about 4-5 customers ahead of me while the cashier had a very casual conversation with a customer.....who was a friend....for about 5 minutes. Moved over to the Express cashier, who had a hand calculator or a mobile phone and had 2 customers ahead of me. Waited 5 minutes while he played and checked out a customer and finally gave up! Told the person behind the customer service counter that they might want to put the merchandise back, since I couldn't wait any longer. He just shrugged and had a blank look! DUH. Called the manager Rob reported the incident to him and he said he now had 6 cashiers and couldn't understand.....DUH....I told him that there were only 2 cashiers at 2:30 and he apologized. He did nothing to comfort me even after I told him I would no longer shop at Hy Vee. This may be an employee owned store but they forgot how to spell CUSTOMER SERVICE. Their are to many good stores in Madison to accept this kind of poor service!
I've always had positive experiences at HyVee. Their staff take pride in their work and will go out of the way to help you. I love that the building is LEED and repurposed as much as possible from the previous construction. The Produce section is phenomenal and large and the meat department is the best in Madison. Also wonderful is the large cafeteria and large selection of foods they have hot and ready to go in house. Kitchen Manager Renee is always friendly and is actualy a trained chef so she takes great pride in her work. Highly recommended!
The buffet is ridiculous, their food is cooked like it was frozen and pre made, I got the chinese buffet and the server rung it up wrong and through out the whole time she never asked me how my food was tasting and never came back to refill my water as she swept and did other things the cook came over and asked how my food was doing which was pretty sad, the restaurant manager came over and didnt make me pay but still she should have better staff running the restaurant. I will never eat there again
Clean, open, well-lit, decent selection, helpful staff. They have awesome produce and a lot of natural/organic options, and the in-store hot Chinese/Italian/Kitchen/Salad Bar mini-food court is decent quality for what it is. Prices are extremely mixed, and seem to change almost at random; often an item will be 2.99 one day, then increase to 4.99 the next -- and it will sport a "Price Reduction" tag. Still, if you buy their store brands (Hy-Vee or Midwest County Faire) or their produce, you can often get a good deal. Just watch out for certain items (e.g., milk) that are priced ridiculously high.
Hy-Vee is like Walmart and Whole Foods got together and had a baby. There is a good range of foods both organic and conventional and i was seriously astounded by their deli area! They had at least 4 or 5 hot deli counters plus the 2 cold deli counters plus a Friday Fish Fry buffet and a large salad bar. There were a couple of ladies doing ssmples and i got to try a couple of yummy items and there was a water refill station which i was stoked to see cause i went there to buy a gallon of water in the first place. i ended up getting the same cashier the second time i came in a she was again, really nice and had a great smile. Actually everyone i saw working was really courteous and smiling. Next time i'm in Madison, I will definitely come here for my water&grocery needs. :-)
