Winchester District Memorial Hospital

Winchester Hospital is lacking. It is lacking in quality medical care. My mother's symptoms were misdiagnosed. The doctor on duty in emergency failed to diagnose water (pneumonia) in her lungs. The doctor failed to follow through on what he heard when checking my mother's breathing. He heard a crackling sound, sent her for xrays then dismissed her. The xrays showed her lungs were clear! Imagine releasing an 89 year old whose lungs display all signs of pneumonia! Her condition did not improve. She had difficulty breathing. Two days later at another Ottawa hospital, the doctor in emergency diagnosed her with pneumonia. Pneumonia just does not happen over a 1 1/2 day period. No amount of new structural bells and whistles can replace quality medical care.
Can someone truly "love" a place where the dress code includes a johnny coat, polypropylene foot covers, and gauze "accessories"? Well, I found the care and the facilities at the Winchester District Memorial Hospital to be pretty darn great, so "Loved it" it is. I had a relatively minor surgical procedure done at WDMH which involved two visits to the hospital: a preop assessment a week before the big day, and, of course, my visit on surgery day (as well as receiving a couple helpful calls from the hospital about my appointments). All my experiences were very good. The staff, including administrative/booking clerks, nurses, and doctors, were highly professional and caring. Plaudits were earned by anesthetist Dr. Moussette, who is an exceptionally warm person and clearly very knowledgeable and thorough in terms of her assessment work. The nurses were also terrific in every way. I was put at ease by their competence and compassion, and as a result of the great care I received, my first surgical experience was minimally painful/uncomfortable, and from a human-outreach perspective, you could even say I had a nice time there. (Which seems like a rather odd thing to say about a couple hospital visits, but there you have it!) I would definitely recommend this hospital to anyone who had the option and could make it out to Winchester (which, for out-of-towners, wasn't too long a drive from Ottawa, in my experience). The hospital itself is also quite nice. It is modern and well-appointed, and I felt comfortable there. Kudos to the lovely and capable staff at Winchester Hospital!
I have been to this hospital on several occasions over a period of 8 years. It used to be a very small community hospital and waiting times were low and service was friendly and through. It underwent major renovations and became the central hospital for the area. While it offers much more in terms of services it is a long wait and the small town service and care feeling has been lost, to some extent. That being said it is a good hospital and staff are corteous and health care is provided. The biggest negative is the increased wait time this is necessary due to the area it now serves.
