I've been visiting Harvard Eye Associates for over 5 years. They are very professional, take the time to discuss all options with patients, offer the latest technology and most of all, they help their patients see! Harvard Eye Associates invests in the future of medicine and its something I'm thankful to be a part of! I highly recommend this practice to anyone looking for an ophthalmologist for cataracts, glaucoma, LASIK, retina, etc. They offer everything under one roof!
I cannot vouch for the surgery side of things, but the eye exams and the contacts are suiting me just fine. Close to home and high quality.
I am probably the only patient that has had one eye done in the East Coast and one on the West Coast for pterygium removal. First, I'll start with the east coast technique which only uses the amniotic graft and "iceberg" technique. The surgeon is top quality with excellent bedside manners. The day after surgery the right eye was revealed and it looked perfectly white. That said my recovery was very slow. Eye was very sensitive to light for a few months. Every time I used the drops the eye would burn for a few minutes after. My vision was slightly blurred but at the time I thought it was caused by the swelling. Now 3.5 years later I still have side effects from this surgery like dry eye, but the two key problems that I do have is astigmatism and when I look to the right passed a certain angle my vision doubles. Ophthalmologist said it is caused by the scar tissue, I don't know what it is but I wish I did not have it. Also the astigmatism on the eye worsens after a full day of wearing reading glasses at work. My eye still looks very white (Not quite a natural color). The cost for the surgery was staggering because the surgeon did not diagnose it as pterygium. Pinguecula like he called it is not covered by insurance. Needless to say the out of pocket money was very high. My left eye got bad this year. I was debating having it done in Florida because of the problems I have had with the right eye. I knew of Dr Hovanesian at Harvard Eye located in Laguna Beach California, thru my internet research. His technique uses the amniotic graft but also a graft from the eye itself. I sent him photos of the eye and he confirmed the issue as pterygium (which is covered by insurance). I paid for the amniotic graft and insurance covered the rest. My final cost was much lower in comparison with the Florida surgeon. The day after surgery I removed the bandages and cleaned up my eye and opened it. Heaven behold my vision was same or better than the day before surgery. I immediately noticed the eye feeling better since the growth was not there any longer (Smoother). The eye cosmetically was not pearly white like the previous surgery but Dr. Hovanesian had already warned about that. That day my wife and I went to Hollywood Ca. The following day I was feeling wonderful pain free and went to Ocean View near San Diego. On Friday two days after surgery I had my final appointment with Dr. H. My eye was great the pressure was normal and I was released to leave back to Texas. Today I am 16 days after surgery. The eye looks great! Most of the redness is gone. No side effects whatsoever. I am extremely happy with the results. The only con that I have was the wait time for the initial appointment and also before surgery. It was over an hour in both cases. Now looking back I did not mind waiting to get it done right.
