Kahala urgent care
Reviews
Dr. Ruggieri is an exceptional great Doctor and the owner of The Kahala and Hawaii Kai Urgent Care locations, but according to his staff he rarely visits either location anymore. Beware of the extremely inaccurate unimaginably bad billing practices and policies at both the Kahala and Hawaii Kai locations. I liked Dr. Ruggieri so much I put up with the constant billing errors at the Kahala location, but gave up in 2009 when the billing was unocorrectable with them and just wrong every time. I stopped going when they refused to pay the $75 they owed me from collecting an advance co-pay and then when they were again paid by my 2 insurance policies. They were legally required to refund me the $75 they were paid twice. When the Hawaii Kai location opened I went not knowing it was associated with Kahala Urgent Care and saw Dr. Ruggierri. He apologized for the billing errors and said they were working to correct them and I could trust the Hawaii Kai location. Last week I tried to see a Doctor there and they refused me service unless I paid a $30 bill from 2009 that they had actually sent to collections from the Kahala location! I never owed it and did not know about it and it was over 5 years ago and they apparently tried to ruin my credit over $30 that I never owed. They still owe me money! I asked to contact Dr. Rugierri and they said he rarely goes to either the Kahala or Hawaii Kai locations and I could not contact him. The wait times are long - over 2 hours for my daughter and 1.5+ hours for my husband (not Urgent Care). Save yourself some time and long term grief with the unimaginably bad billing policies and practices and instead drive to the Kailua Urgent Care or one of the Honolulu Hospitals.
I wanted to write this review to warn anyone thinking about visiting Kahala Urgent Care. I visited the urgent care in mid May of 2013. I was referred to go there by a family friend who used to work with Dr. Ruggieri (The Founder) at Queens Medical Center. I was being seen for a broken metacarpal in my right hand. I just moved to island and do NOT have insurance. knowing I was a self pay patient I assumed they would be easy on the charges and the final bill. It was the exact opposite, they must have seen $$$ signs on my head when I walked in. I was Charged for the Visit $124.40 (That's totally FAIR) I was Charged for X-Rays $72.00 (More then usual but still a FAIR charge) WHERE IT GETS BAD IS THE NEXT 2 I was Charged for "Splint Supplies" $35.00 (The splint was a half hard cast wrapped with an ACE BANDAGE) and I was Charged for "Splint Application" $111.60 (The Dr. didn't wrap the splint a Nurses Aid did and she needed my and my girlfriends help. We held the splint and she just wrapped the ACE BANDAGE around. I can't believe they want to charge $111.00 for a nurses aid to wrap an ace bandage around my hand and forearm while my girlfriend and hold the wet splint because she was struggling and couldn't do it herself. As soon as the splint was on it didn't feel right I mentioned the concern with the Dr. and she said it looked fine and to schedule an appointment with a hand specialist and they would give me a permanent splint. The next day I get a followup call and I explain my frustration with the charge for the splint application and I'm told they actually put the wrong splint on my hand and that the proper splint just arrived today. They asked me to return and get the new splint put on. At this point I already had an appointment with a Hand Specialist and would be getting a permanent splint so I didn't need the new one. I instead asked for a refund for the old splint and the application fee. I said I don't mind paying for everything else because that's fair but the $35.00 for the "splint supplies" and the $111.00 for the application considering it wasn't the right splint and the application was pathetic. Of course they are not authorized to give any refunds. The next day when I visited the hand specialist he laughed at the split my hand was in and said my bone would have healed terribly if it stood in that splint. He said they should have made sure my finger was straight and in line so the boned didn't mend with my finger rolled in. Of course they didn't do that or even look at my finger and the nail on my index finger was practically facing my middle finger. He also said he is a hand and wrist specialized surgeon and he doesn't even charge that much for materials and application for anything even full casts. If anybody is thinking of seeing this Urgent Care for a Injury DON"T DO IT!!!! Save yourself $350 and just go straight to a specialist. Queens Medical has a ton of them. You will waist your money at Kahala Urgent Care! All they will do is take your money and tell you to go see a specialist anyway.
Dr. Ruggieri is a kind, compassionate, knowledgable doctor who is in practice to truly help people. I recommend him.
While I kept having to impress upon my 6 year old son that it is Urgent Care not Instant Care- we were both so pleased with our experience and the physician who saw him! Our pediatrician was on vacation and rather than wait a day to see his substitute (I know we ARE spoiled), I decided to take him to Kahala Urgent Care because my husband has gone there and always received excellent care. We went on a busy morning and were seen and evaluated within an hour. I know it is a long time for a child to wait, but we drew and talked about Club Penguin and Harry Potter. It was definitely a great experience and I would not hesitate to take him there at any time in the future. Thank you for your excellence!
The last thing anyone wants to do on vacation is go to the doctor. We needed to take our child in for an ear infection. This clinic was very pleasant, and had us in and out in 1 hour. Very professional and I feel we got the same level of care as if we had gone to our primary care physician. Very clean and accepted our insurance.
