First the Pros: Dr. Marla J. Magness-Myers does in-house financing. She doesn't force you to pay her the full amount up front or make you get one of those dental credit cards. You can pay as you go. Secondly, she's a competent and skilled orthodontist. She WILL straighten your teeth. Thirdly, she is friendly with a good bedside manner. Now the cons: I'd like to preface this section by stating that I don't believe that Dr. Marla Magness is deliberately trying to give poor service, but I do believe that there are a few things that you need to consider (and be prepared for) if you chose to embark on a long-term patient/doctor relationship with her or Magness Orthodontics as a whole. These points are particularly relevent for adults seeking orthodontic treatment as we have unique needs and expectations that are vastly different from a teenager. 1. (This is most important.) You will not likely have her undivided attention during your appointment. You will be placed in a large room that contains 5 or 6 other examination chairs where other patients are being treated simultaneously. Typically she moves around from patient to patient and (personally) it got a little frustrating for me when she left to start treating another patient that was scheduled after me - sometimes more than once or twice during my appointment. If you are a private person, this set-up may be a little uncomfortable for you because it's hard (if not impossible) to have a truly private, one-on-one dialogue with her about your treatment. 2. The turnover rate among the staff is a little high. During my treatment, staff changed regularly (and sometimes abruptly). I am in no way implying that this was Mr. Magness' fault. For all I know, she could be an excellent employer. However, it is something to consider before starting a long-term relationship at this practice. When I ended my treatment there was only one non-doctor that was there when my treatment began.... and I requested her during each visit. Sadly, when I ended my treatment, I was informed that my requests for that technician were not appreciated. But in all fairness, I didn't feel comfortable starting over with a new technician every month for a service that I was paying $5000 out-of-pocket for. 3. I'm NOT saying that this will necessarily be the case with you....However; I was never, ever called back by Dr. Magness when I left a message via phone, voicemail or email. When I had a problem and I left a message, I was either called back by one of her office staff....or not at all. And I was NOT a habitual caller. I tried to get in touch with her MAYBE 4 times during my 2 years of treatment and I have never had one single call returned by her. The calls were returned by the scheduling clerk or the billing clerk. It wasn’t even a technician! Perhaps she wasn't getting the messages? That's a possibility. You might ask, why did I stay? I stayed for the same reason that most people stay with an orthodontist that they aren't 100% satisfied with... because it's too much trouble and expense to start over with someone else. Magness Orthodontics has been in practice for many years and they have many, many people that are more than satisfied with the treatment that they have received there. I am not implying that this is a bad dental practice. This review is meant to encourage you to do your homework before you begin treatment with ANY doctor...whether it be Dr. Magness or anybody else. If you visit this practice, take a look at the "community" treatment room and make sure that you are totally comfortable with that type of arrangement before you sign a contract. (Especially if you are an ADULT who wants some privacy and one-on-one treatment). Braces are expensive and 2+ years is a long time to be in a situation that isn't right for you. Shop around.... and if you do decide to hire Dr. Magness, then at least you know that you did your due diligence no matter how things turn out. Hopefully, it will be just fine. Wishing you love.
